Press Release: 11 May 2007

Peoples Archive, the online video on-demand archive of the world's greatest thinkers, creators and achievers of our time, is pleased to announce the launch of its Politics section with the life story of the last surviving leader of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, the physician and social activist Dr. Marek Edelman.

Speaking about this newest addition, the Polish Journalist Adam Michnik says:

The uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto, of which Marek Edelman was one of the commanders, was a unique event; it became a symbol of the heroic resistance against a totalitarian mechanism for committing mass murder. It also became an irrefutable component of the combined memory of two nations: Jewish and Polish. Marek Edelman miraculously survived. For many years later, he was the custodian of the graves of a murdered people, the custodian of the memory of a crime and of its victims. He did this without fuss or fanfare, without pathos, and in a way that was both modest and dignified, thus always generating both admiration and respect.

Nevertheless, Marek Edelman was also a stubborn defender of values; his voice was always heard whenever the sound of the groans of the persecuted and the beaten became audible. He always wanted to get there in time, in time to help them, in time to be there before God. Everyone ought to hear the voice of Marek Edelman.

This footage is freely available to view on the Peoples Archive website, where for over 8 hours, Marek Edelman talks in detail in his native Polish, about the Warsaw uprising, his successful medical career as a cardiologist and shares his views on the state of Polish politics today.

Tamsin Newmark, the Director/Producer of the project says:

Being able to present the life story of Marek Edelman, is a great honor and privilege. As the last surviving leader of the Warsaw uprising, not only is he able to bring light to what really happened, but his testimony will be a real asset for present and future generations. We are pleased that Peoples Archive is able to contribute to the preservation of the life story of such a fascinating and inspiring figure in Polish history.

The material has been broken down into 145 stories, all titled and presented chronologically and available with or without English subtitles. They are accompanied by word accurate transcripts, in both Polish and English and additional resources including: complete bibliographies, external links to relevant websites, and internal links to other stories within the Archive exploring similar themes.

Marek Edelman's life story is available to view for free from the Peoples Archive website and will also soon be available for purchase on DVD-ROM.

Peoples Archive contains 37 life stories, totalling more than 200 hours of video divided into 4460 segments. The Archive is grouped into seven sections: Arts, Film, Literature, Masters, Medicine, Politics and Science. Future additions to the Archive include the Politician Jacek Kuron and the Social Activist Jan Jozef Lipski.
